Your own API key

Your provider bills you directly; Contextra adds nothing to that bill.

What you pay: Your provider's price for each request, on your provider account.
What you need: A plan or the free trial, and an API key from Anthropic, OpenAI or Google.
Models: 17 Claude, GPT and Gemini models, chosen per document, for each provider you've added a key for.
Where your text goes: On your own API key, straight from your computer to your provider, never through Contextra's servers. What the provider keeps follows its API terms.
Seeing what you spend: Estimated cost by day, document and project on the app's Usage page, for this computer.
Setting it up: Paste your key in the app: it's checked right away (that it's accepted, not your balance), stored on your computer and never included in backups.

No API key needed: prepaid credits, debited by the tokens each request actually uses.

What you need: A Contextra account and a positive credit balance. No plan needed, during the trial or after it.
Models: A smaller set of models chosen by Contextra, which can change without an app update; the app's model menu lists them.
Where your text goes: Through Contextra's gateway to the AI provider. The gateway doesn't keep the text of your requests, only the AI's reply, encrypted, for a ten-minute retry window. What the provider keeps follows its terms.
Seeing what you spend: Credits used: on the app's Usage page for this computer, and on your dashboard for your whole account. Your balance shows in both.
Setting it up: Buy a pack in your dashboard's Billing page, then choose AI Credits in the app. Credits are yours alone, even on a Team plan.

Your memory goes first, so the AI has less to translate

Once a document's source language is set, your memory fills in what it already knows before any AI runs. Segments it already confirms (101%, 102% and human-approved 100%) aren't sent to the AI for translation.

Works with or without a plan

Your Library, Translation Memories, Term Bases, editing, the Quality check, Word count & quote, TMX and TBX, backups and export (with the notice described next) all keep working. You only need to be signed in to your Contextra account.

Pauses without a plan or credits

Analyze, Translate and AI suggestions pause, and exports carry an “UNLICENSED TRIAL” notice (in Excel, it replaces the sheet's own page header). Exports are never blocked.

To keep the AI running

Choose a plan and keep using your own API key, or buy AI Credits: a credit pack alone keeps the AI working in AI Credits mode, and exports stay clean while your balance is positive.

The same applies when a plan lapses or a computer goes too long without a license check, and the banner at the top of the app says which. While a Team plan is lapsed, its team projects and shared memories can't be downloaded, uploaded or synced; what's already on each computer stays there.

What does the free trial include?

The full desktop app for 14 days from the day you create your account on contextra.pro, with no credit card needed, so nothing is charged when it ends. AI isn't included: add your own Claude, GPT or Gemini API key in the app or buy AI Credits. The license terms cover 1 computer during the trial. Create your account with an email and password: the desktop app signs in only with those, not with Google or Microsoft.

How many computers can I use?

The license terms cover 1 computer during the trial, and 2 computers on Professional or Perpetual. The Terms don't set a number for a Team seat yet.

What exactly is Perpetual?

One payment of $499 for every Professional feature, with no subscription. The AI is paid separately, on your own API key or AI Credits. Its license is re-verified online at least every 14 days. After 14 days without a check, the AI pauses and exports carry a watermark until Contextra can check again; the work on your computer is never locked away. The license belongs to your Contextra account and can't be transferred; deleting the account ends it. Free updates for life when you order by December 31, 2026.

Are updates included?

Contextra tells you when a new version is ready. On a Mac it offers Update and restart, or sends you to the download page when macOS won't let it replace itself. On Windows it opens the download page, where you install the new version yourself. Your documents, memories and settings stay where they were.

How does the Team plan work, and can we try it first?

Team costs $45 per seat per month, billed annually: $540 per seat a year, from 3 seats. The team's owner holds the subscription and pays for it, and a pending invitation holds a seat. You choose the number of seats when you buy, and the dashboard can't change it afterwards yet: to add seats, write to support@contextra.pro. Removing a member frees their seat for someone else but doesn't lower what you pay. Each member uses their own API key or their own AI Credits: credits aren't pooled. To try it first, create a team on contextra.pro during your trial. A team can use 3 seats before it subscribes. Each teammate needs a Contextra account with an active trial or plan of their own, and a new account comes with its own 14-day trial.

Paying for the AI

What does the AI cost in practice?

It depends on the model, the document and how much your memory fills first. On your own API key, your provider bills you at its prices, and the app's Usage page estimates what each document and project cost on this computer. On AI Credits, each request is debited by the tokens it actually uses, at a per-model rate that Contextra sets and may change; the rates aren't listed on this site or shown in the app. The 100-credit pack is the smallest way to see what your documents use.

Do segments filled from my memory cost anything?

Once a document's source language is set, your memory fills what it can before any AI runs, and segments it already confirms (101%, 102% and human-approved 100%) aren't sent to the AI for translation. Near matches are still sent to the AI, and a 101–102% match with mixed formatting can get a small, billed formatting fix. Analyze and adding or editing a glossary term also use the AI. Pre-fill, TM Matches, Concordance and TMX/TBX import and export never do.

Which AI models can I use, and can I switch?

On your own API key: 17 Claude, GPT and Gemini models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google, chosen per document, for each provider you've added a key for. Other endpoints such as Azure, Bedrock or Vertex, local models and machine-translation engines aren't supported. On AI Credits: a smaller set of models that Contextra chooses, which can change without an app update. You can switch between the two in Settings whenever you like.

What happens if I run out of AI Credits mid-document?

Segments already translated stay in your document. A banner opens the top-up page in one click, or Settings to switch to your own API key (which needs a plan or the trial). Requests still running when the balance ran out are charged but their results are dropped, so running those segments again is charged again. Without a plan, exports also carry the “UNLICENSED TRIAL” notice until you top up.

Do AI Credits expire?

Your AI Credits balance has no expiry date. It belongs to the account that bought it and can't be transferred or shared across a team, so deleting your Contextra account also deletes any unspent credits.

Are there limits on AI Credits?

Each account can use up to 2,000 credits a day, with up to 8 requests at a time. Contextra may also pause AI Credits for everyone for a while, for example when a daily safety limit on its spending with AI providers is reached; requests it refuses aren't debited. Your own API key isn't affected.

Buying

How do I buy a plan or AI Credits?

Sign in on contextra.pro and open Billing in your dashboard. Choose Professional (monthly or yearly) or Perpetual, or buy an AI Credits pack. For Team, first create your team on your dashboard's Team page, then buy Team in Billing with the number of seats you need. In the app, Buy credits opens the same Billing page. Prices are in US dollars, taxes excluded, and card payments are handled by Stripe.

Can I cancel, or get a refund?

Subscriptions renew automatically for the same period until you cancel; you can cancel at any time and your plan stays active until the end of the current period. Cancel in Billing, under Invoices & payment methods. For online purchases you may withdraw within 7 days of purchase, as provided by Article 49 of the Brazilian Consumer Protection Code (CDC). Otherwise, fees already paid are non-refundable except where required by law. To withdraw, write to support@contextra.pro. Deleting your Contextra account is different: it cancels any subscription and ends your plan or Perpetual license at once, and deletes any unspent AI Credits; none of these can be restored.

Where does my text go?

Document text leaves your computer to reach the AI, when you share work with a team, and in the backup copies you choose to save to another folder. On your own API key it goes straight to your provider. On AI Credits it passes through Contextra's gateway, a Contextra server that forwards it to the provider. Otherwise your Contextra account receives metadata only, such as each exported document's file name, languages and page count. On AI Credits, the gateway doesn't keep the text of your requests. It keeps the AI's reply, encrypted, for a ten-minute retry window, and a billing record of each request with no text in it. Your Library and memories are stored on your computer and copied to a backup folder if you choose one. The API keys you enter in the app are stored on your computer and never go to Contextra. On the Team plan, the documents you export or hand back and the memories you share also go to Contextra's servers.

Do I need to be online?

Only for the AI, for the Team plan's downloads, uploads and memory sync, and for a license check at least once every 14 days (7 on a Team seat). Once you've signed in, everything else runs on your computer. If a check is overdue, the AI pauses and exports carry a watermark until the app can check again, and the work on your computer is never locked away.

Which files and computers does Contextra support?

Word, Excel and PowerPoint files (.docx, .xlsx and .pptx), exported in the same format. What isn't translated is listed in note 1 under Professional. It runs on macOS 13 or later (Apple Silicon or Intel) and on Windows 10 and 11 (x64), with its interface in English, Português (Brasil) or Español.
